Child colourint a spooky family

Top Tip

Don't worry about making them look “perfect”. Halloween is a great excuse for weird colours, wonky faces and wonderfully spooky creations!

Make it More Challenging

Create a whole Halloween scene using several templates together and give each character a personality or invent a story about them. Try decorating each using only three colours.

How to Play

Pick any template to decorate, or try to complete the whole collection.

Colour, paint or shade the outlines. They don't have to be traditional Halloween colours.

Add torn paper, tissue paper, cotton wool, leaves, stickers or other craft materials to give your decorations some texture.

Give your characters silly faces, patterns, or costumes. What does your witch look like? Can you make a very friendly ghost?

Carefully cut around the outside of your finished designs. Younger children may want an adult to help with this part.

Stick your decorations around the house, put them in windows or attach string and hang them up to make your own Halloween display.

What You'll Need

Our printed Halloween template sheets

Colouring pencils, crayons or felt-tip pens

Coloured paper or card

Paints or paint pens (if you want to get messier)

Optional: glue, googly eyes, glitter, stickers, pom-poms or tissue paper, string or ribbon for hanging the finished decorations

Why it's Great

This activity needs very little preparation and gives children plenty of freedom to make the pictures their own.

Colouring helps develop fine motor skills, concentration and creativity.

Different family combinations let children choose characters that feel familiar to them.

A great activity to do together. Parents can join in, talk about the different characters and invent funny stories about their spooky families.

Variations

Create your own family: Try drawing your own monster family. Who's in it and what makes them spooky?

Make a spooky portrait: Choose your favourite family and create a background for them, such as a haunted house, spooky forest or moonlit graveyard

Mix and match: Choose different characters from the printable and create a completely new family.

Give each family member a special monster power and see if your child can draw something that shows what their power is
