How children learn through play

Play is one of the most natural ways children learn. From building towers and making up stories to exploring outdoors, playing gives children opportunities to experiment, solve problems and understand the world around them.

Play is learning

When children play, they are constantly making decisions, testing ideas and learning from what happens next. A child building a tower learns about balance and cause and effect. A child inventing a game learns about rules, communication and negotiation.

Much of this learning happens without children even realising they are learning. Play gives them the freedom to try things, make mistakes and try again.

Different types of play support different skills

Creative play can encourage imagination and self-expression. Physical play helps children develop movement, coordination and confidence. Building, sorting and problem-solving games can help children develop early thinking and reasoning skills.

Playing with other people also gives children opportunities to practise sharing, taking turns, communicating and understanding different points of view.

You don't need complicated activities

Some of the most valuable play can start with very little. A cardboard box can become a spaceship. Cushions can become an obstacle course. A walk outside can turn into a hunt for different colours, shapes or sounds.

The important thing isn't always what the activity is. Giving children time and space to explore, imagine and make their own choices can be just as valuable.

Making time for play

Family life can be busy, and finding time for activities isn't always easy. Play doesn't have to take hours. Even a few minutes of shared play can give children an opportunity to explore something new and spend meaningful time together.

Sometimes the hardest part is simply deciding what to do. That's where having a few simple ideas ready can make family time feel a little easier.
